This activity is used to create a new handling unit. A handling unit is always identified by unique ID (a handling unit ID). A handling unit is used to pack parts throughout the supply chain. Handling units can be entered for purchase order receipt, shop order receipts, in inventory and on a shipment. Typical examples of handling units are boxes or pallets. A handling unit can also be a part of handling unit structure, for example some boxes on a pallet. Inventory parts can be attached/packed in a handling unit and then the different material operations needed (issue, move, scrap etc.) can be performed for the handling unit (rather than for each specific part which the handling unit consists of). An example could be a box full of serials; a move action can then be performed for the handling unit, rather than for each serial ID.
Each handling unit is unique (identified by the handling unit ID) and the specific handling unit ID contains certain inventory parts or another handling units (if it is a handling unit structure). For each handling unit it is possible to define characteristics like dimensions, weight or volume and packing requirements. It is possible to have alternative ID for the handling unit, such as a unique SSCC.
A handling unit is always created with a connection to a type (handling unit Type) which can define attributes like dimensions, weight and volume restrictions generic for that specific type. Example of types could be: box, package, pallet, container, etc.
To create a handling unit, select New from Handling Unit page and the Create New Handling Unit dialog will open.
