Standards and Regulations

Standards and regulations are applicable for all designs on a national, industry, manufacturing, local, and in-house level. For IFS/Asset Design, standards and regulations are divided into internal and external.

Internal Standards and Regulations

Internal Standards and Regulations are based on past company experiences and practices, and may include several or all of the following:

• Construction standards
• Project handbooks
• Purchasing rules
• Regulations for project management
• Unwritten rules concerning past designs and purchases
• Maintenance issues, such as limiting the stocking of spare parts and ensuring technical competence for new equipment

External Standards and Regulations

Plant changes and/or renovations are made in compliance with external standards and regulations, as set forth by local or national authorities. Documentation supporting the changes and/or some type of inspection may be required. These external standards and regulations, which vary from design to design, consist of:

• Standards, instructions, and inspections to insure that the work is done to code
• Special considerations for the environment (e.g. air, water, wildlife, populated areas and waste management).
• Local laws and regulations
