This activity is used to attach parts to a handling unit. Either in inventory or on a shipment.
For Package Parts in Shipment Handling Unit Structure, the setting Pack Components in Shipment controls if the package part itself or its components should be available to attach to a handling unit. The setting is available on the Package Part page and is inherited to the shipment line when it's created.
If the Handling Unit is created for with the packaging material part that is connected to a Handling Unit Type, and the associated parts are subsequently attached to that handling unit, the corresponding packaging material part (inventory part) is consumed. As a result, the On Hand Quantity of the relevant packaging material decreases on the Inventory Parts In Stock page.
Once a handling unit is loaded, altering the attached quantity in that handling unit will not be possible anymore. If any alterations are to be done, the handling unit must be unloaded.
Note: If pack at least one node level into an existing empty handling unit structure in inventory then all handling units in that structure are consumed.
For Purchasing the Packing Rule is set as Single Handling Unit. If the Issue packaging materials toggle button is enabled in the Supplier for purchase part then that will inherit to the purchase order line. Accordingly, packaging materials will be issued during the purchase order receipt when the parts are packed. But in most cases, parts are already packed by the supplier using the same handling unit type. Therefore, the packaging material is not issued for connected handling unit type during the receiving process. Hence, the default value of the Issue packaging materials toggle button is set to disable in the Supplier for purchase part.
A handling unit must exist in the handling unit structure.
Optionally an inventory part can be connected to the Handling Unit Type basic data in order to get consumption of packaging material as part of the packing process.
The handling unit must not be loaded.
Parts are attached to the handling unit and attached lines can be viewed in the Handling Units tab.
The packaging material parts (inventory parts) are consumed as per the handling unit types.
