Define Project Plan

Explanation

Perform this activity when you want to define the project plan before entering project-specific data into the system. This is a manual activity, the main purpose of which is to provide an understanding of how the project plan should look before entering the plan into the system.

The project plan serves as a blueprint, detailing the project’s objectives, scope, milestones, and deliverables. This plan is reflected in the project structure, also known as the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), which is a visual and hierarchical representation that outlines the strategy and execution of all project activities to complete the project.

When defining the project structure, the project objectives and project milestones should be considered, along with a plan on how to divide the work in the project into sub projects and activities. It’s through this detailed structure that the work identified is carried out and managed. Sub projects represent significant sections of the project and can be thought of as mini-projects within the larger overall project. Activities reflect the work that needs to be performed to complete the sub projects and they are the points at which work is assigned, performed and reported.

Project structures from past projects can often be reused fully or partially. For similar projects, the work involved in a project often involves repetitive work, such as certain activities and project deliverables. Even though every project is unique in some way, you can copy project structures and include all elements or just parts of the structure. Then, you can add any new sub projects or activities as needed.

As a result of this activity, you should have an understanding of how the project structure should be entered in the system.
