Rename Serial Object
Explanation
This activity is used to rename the serial number of a serial object. This can be performed in Serial
Object, Serial Objects, Equipment Object Navigator, Explore Equipment Objects, and Object Structure pages
using the Rename Serial option within Move/Copy/Rename command group.
After executing this command, the Rename Object Serial No assistant opens with fields
Object ID, Part No, Existing Serial No, and New Serial No. The Object ID, Part No, and
Existing Serial No fields are read-only and display the current information for the selected serial
object. Enter the new serial number in the New Serial No field and
click OK to complete the rename operation. The serial number is updated in the system
while the Object ID and all other object attributes remain unchanged.
This activity uses a rename method developed specifically for service and equipment objects, which provides
enhanced flexibility for renaming serial objects. Equipment object serials can be renamed even when inventory
transactions exist for the serial and when the current position is In Facility or In Repair
Workshop. This functionality is designed to support real-world scenarios where serial numbers need to be corrected
or updated during any stage of maintenance and service operations.
Prerequisites
- The serial object must exist in the system with a valid part number and serial number.
- The user must have the appropriate permission set with rights to modify equipment objects.
- The new serial number must be unique and not already assigned to another serial object with the same part
number.
- The serial object must have one of the following current positions:
- In Facility
- In Inventory
- In Repair Workshop
- Contained (and the top parent serial must have current position In
Facility, In Inventory, or In Repair Workshop)
System Effects
- The serial number field for the selected serial object is updated.
- The system validates that the new serial number is unique for the specified part number.
- The Object ID and all other object attributes remain unchanged.
- All references to the serial object across the system are updated with the new serial number.
- The complete maintenance history and work order history linked to the Object ID are
preserved.
- Existing inventory transactions associated with the serial object are maintained and remain valid after the
rename.
- The serial number display is updated in all equipment object views and reports.
- An journal entry is created recording the serial number change with user ID and timestamp.
- Any active work orders or service requests associated with the serial object reflect the new serial
number.
- Warranty information and contract associations linked to the object are maintained.
