Create Standard Task

Explanation

This activity is used to create a Standard Task for the Standard Task Library. Predefined execution for Services can be defined using these Standard Tasks. The Standard Tasks can be used to create Work Tasks to execute on a Request.

A Standard Task contains:

Work Steps
Work Stage
Activity Type
Resource Demands including skills, competencies, and certificates
Material/Part Demands

Standard Task attribute inheritance

Attributes defined on a Standard Task act as default values.

When a Standard Task is linked to a Service Catalog Item, these values are copied to the specific Service Catalog Item / Standard Task combination. The copied values can be adjusted per Service Catalog Item without changing the original Standard Task.

When a Request is created using a Service Catalog Item, the resulting Request Task inherits the values from the Service Catalog Item configuration.

If a Request Task is created directly from the Standard Task (that is, not via a Service Catalog Item), it inherits the values defined on the Standard Task itself.

Example – Schedule Manually

The Schedule Manually attribute is set to TRUE on Standard Task A.
Standard Task A is linked to Service Catalog Item AA → the value is inherited as TRUE.
Standard Task A is also linked to Service Catalog Item BB → the value is inherited as TRUE, then changed to FALSE for this Service Catalog Item.

Resulting values:

Standard Task A (default): TRUE
Service Catalog Item AA: TRUE
Service Catalog Item BB: FALSE

When a Request is created:

Using Service Catalog Item AA → Request Task value is TRUE
Using Service Catalog Item BB → Request Task value is FALSE
Created directly from Standard Task A → Request Task value is TRUE

Exceptions

There are three exceptions to the behavior described above.

The following attributes are centrally managed on the Standard Task and can only be updated on the source Standard Task:

Standard Task ID
Description
Duration

Changes to these attributes apply to all Service Catalog Items and Request Tasks associated with the Standard Task.

Special case – Duration and Recurring Services

The Duration attribute has a special behavior for Recurring Services.

When a Recurring Service Standard Task record is created, the Duration value is copied from the Standard Task. From that point onward, the value is managed on the Recurring Services Standard Tasks record and is no longer affected by subsequent changes to the Standard Task.

Work Stages should be defined in Work Stages to define a Work Stage for a Standard Task.
Activity Types should be defined in Activity Types to define a Activity Type for a Standard Task.

System Effects

As a result of this activity, new a Standard Task will be added to the Standard Task Library.
