Estimating non-routine work

In your production template or production plan in PP&C, you can generate estimates of the time and types of resources that will be required to address the non-routine work during the maintenance visit. This allows you to plan the project to the capacity available more accurately, thus reducing the risk of capacity shortages. As the project gets underway and real non-routine tasks are added to the workscope, you can compare the estimates with the real numbers to either adjust the plan, or adjust the values used in estimating non-routine in similar projects in the future.

To produce estimates of non-routine work in the production plan, do the following:

  • Create planning types.
  • Assign the correct planning types to routine tasks in the production template or production plan.
  • Generate the non-routine estimation tasks. You can regenerate the non-routine estimation tasks at any time; the existing non-routine estimation tasks are deleted and new ones are created.

In your template or production plan you can designate a project phase as the non-routine phase for all non-routine work in the template or plan, or designate several phases and assign them as non-routine phases for one or more tasks, or for one or several project phases.

When you generate the non-routine estimation tasks, they are placed in the designated non-routine phase of the initiating taskā€”the routine task from which the estimation task is created. If the initiating task does not have a designated non-routine phase, PP&C places the non-routine estimation tasks in the non-routine phase associated with the phase of the initiating task. If the phase of the initiating task does not have a non-routine phase, PP&C places the non-routine estimation tasks in the default non-routine phase of the template.
